Exciting news as we began new project in 3T this week...PEN PALS from California! Each student in our class is matched with a 4th grade pen pal from Saint Anthony-Immaculate C onception School in San Francisco, CA. The students and I were very excited when our first letter arrived in the mail this week is a big colorful envelope. Within two days, our response letters were back in the mail!
How did we pick these pen pals? Their teacher, Miss Gleeson, is a friend of mine that I know through her friend Mr. Bair , and his brother Lt. Bair (Mount Union friend who is serving in Iraq/Germany). Through these "degrees of seperation", Miss Gleeson and I have been able to share classroom ideas and we thought a pen pal project would be beneficial to both of our classes. I have visited California serveral times and even had an opportunity to see their school a couple summers ago. I shared pictures of our pen pals city on Friday so that our students can have a better idea of type of community they live. And, to top it off, Miss Gleeson will hopefully be able to visit our classroom the last day before Christmas break!
Not only is this project a fun way to learn about a new culture, students will be practicing their writing skills (more specifically their friendly letter format, writing neatly and with detail, grammar).
Above are a picture of our pen pals' state and below is a picture of their teacher and I! Also, you may be interested in checking out THEIR blog: http://saicfourthgrade.blogspot.com
